📜 Create Your Own Time Rift Card

Objective

Students will deepen their understanding of historical figures and material culture by designing original Anachronism cards. This activity reinforces research skills, contextual analysis, and creative synthesis.

Materials

  • Blank card templates (digital or paper)
  • Access to research tools (textbooks, library, online databases)
  • Examples of existing Anachronism/Time Rift cards for reference
  • Art supplies (if physical cards are created)

Setup (5–7 min)

  • Teacher introduces the concept of Anachronism cards.
  • Show sample cards and explain how each combines:
    • Champion (historical figure)
    • Artifact (object they used/wore/inspired by)
    • Event/Context (time period or defining moment).
  • Clarify expectations: accuracy, creativity, and historical significance.

Activity Steps

1. Card Assignment (5 min)

  • Each student selects or is assigned a historical figure (Champion).
  • Encourage inclusion of both well-known and obscure figures.

2. Research Phase (10–15 min)

Students investigate:

  • Time Period: When did this figure live?
  • Artifacts: What tools, clothing, or symbols are associated with them?
  • Inspirations: What ideas, philosophies, or cultural influences shaped them?
  • Significance: Why is this figure historically important?

3. Card Creation (15–20 min)

  • Students design their card with:
    • Name and portrait/illustration of the Champion.
    • Artifact(s) linked to the figure.
    • Short description or “flavor text” explaining historical context.
  • Optional: Assign stats or abilities if used in gameplay.

4. Share & Tournament (10–15 min)

  • Students present their cards to the class.
  • Cards can be entered into a mini-tournament or displayed as a gallery.
  • Teacher highlights strong research and clever connections.

Extension (Optional, 10–15 min)

  • Obscure Figures Challenge: Students choose lesser-known figures, requiring deeper research.
  • Class Exhibit: Create a “deck wall” where cards are displayed with short explanatory blurbs.
  • Tournament Play: Use student-created cards in a classroom bracket.

Assessment

  • Formative: Observe research notes and card drafts for accuracy and effort.
  • Summative: Evaluate final cards based on:
  • Historical accuracy (dates, artifacts, context)
  • Depth of research (especially for obscure figures)
  • Creativity and clarity of presentation

⏱ Total Time: ~45–60 minutes (depending on depth of research and sharing).
