🔍 Artifact Detective (25–30 min)

Objective

Students practice historical inference and material culture analysis by examining Artifact cards and connecting them to Champions or Events.

Materials

  • Artifact cards (e.g., Khutga knife, Viking longboat, astrolabe)
  • Optional: Champion/Event cards for matching phase
  • Paper or worksheets for notes

Setup (3–4 min)

  • Distribute Artifact cards to students.
  • Explain: students will act as “artifact detectives,” inferring details from the card image and text.

Activity

1. Observation & Note Taking (5–6 min)

Students examine their Artifact card closely and jot down:

  • What is this object made of?
  • Who might have used it?
  • What does it tell us about the society that made it?

2. Pair/Group Discussion (7–8 min)

  • Share inferences with a partner or small group.
  • Compare interpretations and refine answers.

3. Matching Phase (5–6 min)

  • Select a Champion or Event card that best connects to the Artifact.
  • Explain reasoning (e.g., Musashi + katana-like artifact, Viking longboat + Norse raiders).

4. Class Share Out (5–6 min)

  • A few groups present their Artifact + Champion/Event pairing.
  • Teacher highlights strong reasoning and corrects misconceptions.

Extension (Optional, 5–7 min)

  • Students create a “mini museum exhibit”:
    • Place Artifact + Champion/Event pairing on wall or table.
    • Add a short explanatory label (2–3 sentences).
  • Class does a quick “gallery walk” to see exhibits.

Assessment

Formative Options

  • Observe note-taking and group discussions for inference skills.
  • Quick checklist: Did students identify material, user, and cultural significance?

Summative Options

  • Collect written notes or exhibit labels. Assess for:
  • Accuracy of inference
  • Strength of reasoning in Artifact + Champion/Event match
  • Clarity of explanation

⏱ Total Time: ~25–30 minutes (extension pushes closer to 35).
